Karachi Airport faces a critical issue as stray dogs freely roam the General Aviation area, creating serious safety risks for flights. Despite the evident dangers, relevant authorities have yet to take decisive action to address the problem.
Reports reveal that stray dogs are frequently seen wandering near the hangars in the General Aviation section, an area where training aircraft often operate. This alarming situation has already led to close calls, including an incident where a stray dog nearly collided with an aircraft today.
The presence of these animals has forced authorities to cancel at least one flight due to the risk of a potential accident. Furthermore, stray dogs have also been spotted around Jinnah Terminal’s main runway, heightening concerns about flight safety.
Apart from stray animals, the General Aviation area has additional hazards like foreign object debris (FOD), including metal pieces and other objects scattered on the ground. These items pose a threat to aircraft during taxiing, often resulting in tire damage. Replacing damaged tires not only delays flights but also incurs significant costs, sometimes amounting to millions of rupees.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first time stray dogs have been reported near Karachi Airport. The recurring issue emphasizes the need for immediate measures to clear the area of animals and debris. Neglecting these risks could lead to a major accident, putting passengers and crew members in danger.
Authorities must prioritize flight safety and ensure a secure environment at the airport by removing stray animals and implementing stricter control over foreign objects. This proactive approach will prevent future incidents and safeguard aviation operations at Karachi Airport.
