Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the urgent need to eliminate the growing threat of extremism in Pakistan. Speaking during a high-level meeting of the National Apex Committee, he highlighted the ongoing security challenges and stressed the importance of tackling the issue with full determination.
The meeting was attended by key military and civilian leaders, including federal ministers, provincial chief ministers, and heads of intelligence agencies. Discussions revolved around the overall law and order situation, the results of counterterrorism operations, and matters related to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif noted that militant groups from Afghanistan are crossing into Pakistan to carry out attacks, posing a serious threat to national security. He said, “The time has come to completely eradicate the menace of extremism. These infiltrators are not only launching attacks but also receiving support from facilitators within Pakistan.”
The prime minister also praised the efforts of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in Punjab, describing it as ahead of other provinces in its effectiveness. He revealed that a recent cross-border attack was met with a strong response from Pakistani forces, demonstrating the country’s commitment to safeguarding its borders.
Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the rise of digital threats, pointing out that malicious campaigns against Pakistan are being orchestrated from abroad through social media. He said, “Foreign-based adversaries are distorting facts and spreading lies about Pakistan. This digital terrorism must be addressed with the combined efforts of federal and provincial authorities.”
He condemned the false narratives being spread about the sacrifices made by Pakistan’s security forces, including the Rangers, who have laid down their lives in the fight against terrorism. He added, “These are the sons of our soil, and their sacrifices will never be forgotten. Their bravery is the foundation of Pakistan’s ongoing fight against terrorism.”
While addressing recent political protests, he criticized the misuse of social media to propagate misleading information. Referring to a specific incident in Islamabad, he called the statements made about Rangers personnel unfortunate and urged everyone to recognize the sacrifices made by law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and stability.
The prime minister concluded by reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to defeating extremism in all forms, stating that the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for the nation will not go in vain. He also highlighted Pakistan’s active role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the next two years, promising that the country will play a constructive role on the global stage.
