Karachi’s New Year’s Eve celebrations took a tragic turn as aerial firing incidents across the city left 29 people injured, including women and children. Despite repeated warnings from authorities, the reckless practice of celebratory gunfire continued to endanger lives, casting a shadow over the festivities.
The incidents occurred in several areas of Karachi, including Liaquatabad, Tariq Road, Shah Faisal Colony, Orangi Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Azizabad, and Korangi. Reports indicate that in Liaquatabad alone, multiple individuals were injured due to stray bullets. Similar incidents unfolded on Tariq Road and in Shah Faisal Colony, where two women suffered injuries. Tragically, in Azizabad, a child was struck by celebratory gunfire, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the danger.
Other areas such as Lyari, Aram Bagh, Malir, and Tipu Sultan also reported cases of aerial firing injuries. Rescue teams acted swiftly to provide medical assistance, transporting victims to nearby hospitals. Doctors are working tirelessly to treat those affected, and authorities have once again stressed the severe consequences of this hazardous activity.
Ahead of the celebrations, AIG Karachi Javed Alam Odho had issued a stern warning against aerial firing. He reminded citizens that such actions would result in attempted murder charges. The warning came in light of last year’s grim statistics, where 31 people were injured under similar circumstances. Despite these measures, the dangerous practice persisted, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement and public awareness.
Authorities are urging residents to celebrate responsibly and avoid activities that put lives at risk. They emphasized that such incidents tarnish the joy of the New Year and lead to unnecessary suffering for families and communities. Moving forward, law enforcement agencies plan to increase surveillance and take more stringent action against violators to ensure public safety during future celebrations.
Let this serve as a reminder that celebrations should be a source of happiness, not harm. It is crucial for everyone to act responsibly and help create a safer environment for all.
