Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired an important meeting to review the performance of key electricity distribution companies, including Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO). The meeting addressed critical issues related to overbilling, electricity theft, and ensuring transparency in the billing process, as reported by Express News.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed serious concerns over unethical practices like overbilling and power theft. He directed officials to take immediate and strict action against those involved in such practices. To improve the billing system, he emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the installation of smart meters. This step aims to ensure accurate readings and eliminate discrepancies in billing, fostering transparency and fairness for consumers.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the issue of electricity theft, which has been a significant challenge for distribution companies. He instructed authorities to implement comprehensive measures to curb theft and ensure efficient electricity distribution. These measures will not only improve the financial health of power companies but also reduce the burden on honest consumers.
Another pressing matter raised during the meeting was the slow progress in appointing Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) for power distribution companies. The Prime Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the delays and directed that the appointments be completed promptly. He emphasized that the selection process must be transparent and based on merit to ensure competent leadership in the electricity sector.
Recruitment within electricity distribution companies also came under scrutiny. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of merit-based hiring and warned that no compromise would be tolerated in ensuring transparency. He urged the use of all available resources to achieve the targets set by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), underscoring the need for accountability and professionalism in the sector.
The meeting also included a detailed performance review of the companies. As of November 2024, the recovery rates were as follows: LESCO at 96.82%, PESCO at 87.98%, and FESCO at 97.57%. While these figures highlight some progress, the Prime Minister called for further improvements to enhance efficiency and address challenges.
Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahsan Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Owais Ahmad Khan Leghari, State Minister for IT & Telecom Shaza Fatima, State Minister for Finance & Revenue Ali Pervez Malik, Prime Minister’s Coordinator Rana Ehsaas Afzal, and senior government officials were present at the meeting. Their participation underscored the government’s commitment to tackling issues in the electricity sector and improving the overall performance of distribution companies.
This initiative reflects the government’s resolve to enhance transparency, combat corruption, and ensure efficient electricity distribution for the benefit of citizens. Through these efforts, the authorities aim to create a more reliable and consumer-friendly power supply system across the country.
