The Sindh government, through its Department of Sports, organized an exhilarating donkey cart race in Karachi, drawing large crowds and showcasing the city’s vibrant traditions. This exciting event began at ICI Tower on M.A. Jinnah Road, with over 40 donkey carts competing for top honors and cash prizes.
In a thrilling contest, ‘Sartaaj,’ a champion donkey owned by Arif from Liaquatabad, secured the first position for the second consecutive year. The win came with a grand prize of PKR 100,000. Known for his speed and agility, Sartaaj previously won the prestigious Champions Donkey Cart Race, solidifying his legacy in this traditional sport.
Other top performers included ‘Bijli,’ ridden by Tariq, who claimed the second spot with a prize of PKR 75,000, and ‘Kala,’ guided by Zakir, who earned third place and PKR 50,000. ‘Chai Pati,’ managed by Asghar, finished in fourth place. Participants ranking beyond third were awarded PKR 25,000 each as a token of appreciation for their efforts.
The race concluded at Fair Hall with a grand prize distribution ceremony. Secretary of Sports, Abdul Aleem Lashari, presided over the event as the chief guest, distributing cash prizes and shields to the winners.
During the ceremony, Lashari announced the Sindh government’s plan to formally register donkey cart owners involved in these races. This initiative aims to provide both financial and administrative support to the participants, ensuring the sustainability of this cultural sport. He emphasized the need to prioritize the welfare of the animals alongside promoting traditional races, highlighting the importance of humane treatment and care.
The government reiterated its commitment to fostering the tradition of donkey cart racing while encouraging young talent to participate in diverse sports. This event not only celebrated Karachi’s rich cultural heritage but also inspired a renewed appreciation for traditional sports in Sindh.
