Recently, the Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) made a startling announcement: 28 bottled water brands in Pakistan have been declared unsafe for drinking. The council conducted an extensive study by testing 176 water samples collected from 20 different cities across the country. These tests were done to ensure that bottled water brands meet the safety standards set by the Pakistan Standards & Quality Control Authority (PSQCA).
The results of the testing raised serious concerns. Many of the tested brands failed to meet the necessary guidelines, showing harmful chemical and microbiological contamination. This means that these bottled waters are not safe for human consumption, posing potential health risks to those who drink them.
Several brands had dangerously high levels of sodium. Sodium, when consumed in excessive amounts, can cause health problems such as high blood pressure and other heart-related issues. Some of the brands found with too much sodium include Miran Drinking Water, Pak Aqua, Jel Bottled Water, Neo, Aab-e-Dubai, Eltsen, Pure Water, Aqua Health, Oslo, and More Plus. If you drink these waters, you might be unknowingly exposing yourself to health risks.

Even more concerning is the presence of arsenic in some bottled water brands. Arsenic is a toxic substance that can cause serious health problems, including cancer, skin damage, and problems with the nervous system. The following brands were found to have arsenic levels beyond safe limits: One Pure Drinking Water, Indus, Premium Safa Purified Water, Orwell, and Natural Pure Life. Drinking water with arsenic can be especially harmful if consumed over long periods.
Another issue found in some bottled water brands was the presence of high potassium levels. Potassium is an essential mineral, but too much of it can lead to heart problems. Hunza Utter Water was one of the brands that had potassium levels exceeding the permissible range.
In addition to these chemical contaminants, the study also revealed the presence of harmful bacteria in 16 bottled water brands. Bacterial contamination can cause stomach infections and other illnesses. Brands like SS Water, Sip Sip Premium Drinking Water, Miran Drinking Water, D-Nova, Sky Rain, Neo, Pure Water, Dream Pure, Aqua Sharav Pure Drinking Water, Marvi, Ice Well, Akb Sky, Karakorum Spring Water, More Plus, Essentia, and Life Inn were found to be contaminated with bacteria, making them unsafe for drinking.
This alarming discovery highlights the importance of carefully checking the safety of bottled water before consuming it. While bottled water may seem like a convenient and safe option, not all brands meet the necessary safety standards. It’s essential to pay attention to the quality of the water you are drinking to avoid health risks. Always check the safety certifications on bottled water labels and stay informed about the latest research and reports on water quality.
